If you have a Palmpre or Blackberry (sorry Storm owners, won’t work here) you can get Grooveshark Mobile music service for just $3 a month. For those of you moaning that it’s not free it is still $10 cheaper than satellite. Compared to Pandora and Slacker which give you pre-programed streaming music and also have mobile versions, the big difference is that Grooveshark let’s you choose the songs directly. Listeners can avoid being cut off by paying a small fee of $0.99 that gives them unlimited access. This is both a good and bad thing. Due to he recent settlement between webcasters and SoundExchange that changes the rates on royalty payments, Pandora has to pay more for its content. Given the ease of use this incredible Internet radio service offers I think the $0.99 a month will be well worth it.

You can now follow what your friends are listening to. It also lets you search for friends around the world. Hey with gas prices the way they are this might be the closest to international travel most of us will experience. Most internet radio sites offer this type of feature so nothing new here. It is however a great addition to Deezer which is one of the most unique Internet Radio services around.

Flytunes, quickly becoming my favorite thing on my iPod touch has just released a new interface and now also offers videos. This just keeps getting cooler. It’s also encroaching on Slacker.

Here are some screen shots showing the new interface on FlyTunes. Click to follow the post to the FlyTunes screen shots.

Looks like they took a clue from Microsoft with the What do you want to do line

From this line you choose what you want to do, note they added Video and Podcasts. Not much under either at the moment. More on this later

I selected Radio High Bitrate. this gives you the Select a Genre and Station page shown below. Now you select a genre

After the genre you select a station

Now you click the Play button and off you go.

Unfortunately after this the nice interface returns to the generic Quicktime “Playing Movie” graphic with no song information or other indicator of activity. I’m sure the folks at FlyTunes are working on this. Let’s hope so at least.

Below is a shot showing the rest of the menu with Podcasts and something called Accuradio. Not sure what this is but I guess we’ll see.

You can now do some customization to FlyTunes menus but clicking on that TINY little “Use a custom Guide” button was difficult and I have little fingers.

The next shot shows how you can customize the stations you’ll see on your device. Nice to turn off all the stations you’ll never listen to. You can do it by genre or by individual channels.

The following is a shot of the podcast menu. Not much here yet just a “How to get into College” podcast so we’ll skip that screen shot for now.

Here is what you see if you click on VIDEO and the KIDS and Family section.

This was well thought out. They give you a nice description of the show and a list of the available programs.

The video loaded with astounding speed, faster than most of the radio stations load. Maybe most folks are just not into Dora. Of course is you turn the iPod sideways it shows you the video in landscape mode.

All in all FlyTunes is making Remarkable strides in their Interface and content selection on a weekly basis. My only wish would be to make their website more informative. They could use some help files and better videos. (the videos are good and I of all people can appreciate being on a budget) This is one of those weird spaces that if you don’t keep ahead in the mind of the consumer someone else will.

You can see from where they are going that this is all leading to a “client based” release of FlyTunes based on Apples SDK coming in June. Then thing will really start to get interesting.

For more information or to sign up for FlyTunes go to www.flytunes.fm

I just read a post on Chicago Tribune.com that Flytunes will cache up to 40 minutes of audio. This means you can listen to your favorite Flytunes station, they are up to over 60 now, and then take it on the road with you without your WiFi connection for your iPod touch. Of course those of you with an iPhone can still use the available Edge network stations while away from WiFi but this is neat. I’m trying mine tomorrow morning. How many minutes of Internet Radio will Flytunes cache on your iPod touch or iPhone? Leave a comment here. Update after the break…

UPDATE: This morning (May 12, 2008) I fired up Flytunes on my iPod touch and let it stream for about 8-10 minutes then got in the car to drive to work. Flytunes continued to play cached content for 35 minutes. I should mention that I was playing “The Office” station which is a lo-fi station geared for the iPhone so it might not have cached as much had I picked a higher bit rate station. Still a pretty neat trick. Makes one wonder how much longer satellite radio can last before Internet Radio takes over on all fronts.

I love listening to Internet radio. I love it more on my iPod and Slacker. But these devices perform best or ONLY if there are in range of WiFi. Enter WiMax. WiMax is WiFi on steroids. Depending on the implementation it not only extends a WiFi signal beyond a local hot spot, it can extend it past the horizon! Imagine listening to your favorite stations on a portable device anywhere you go. True unlimited access to any music, talk or podcasts you want. Nirvana. Continue for more.

Clearwire a joint venture of some communication heavy weights and Intel will attempt to build the first large scale WiFi networks.

Here’s the starting point: By 2011, Clearwire intends to offer WiMax services to the top 100 cities in the U.S. That means rolling out significant parts of the network in 2010. Also on Maloney’s check list: a low-cost design of the network. “It has to be Web 2.0-capable,” he adds, which means having lots of bandwidth to send data either to or from devices. “It’s got to have a lot of bandwidth, up and down, and packets have be able to get off quickly. You can’t afford the latency of traditional networks,” he adds. Read the rest at Forebes.com

This is cool stuff, would this change your life in a fundamental way? Comment below
