I love listening to Internet radio. I love it more on my iPod and Slacker. But these devices perform best or ONLY if there are in range of WiFi. Enter WiMax. WiMax is WiFi on steroids. Depending on the implementation it not only extends a WiFi signal beyond a local hot spot, it can extend it past the horizon! Clearwire a joint venture of some communication heavy weights and Intel will attempt to build the first large scale WiFi networks.

Here’s the starting point: By 2011, Clearwire intends to offer WiMax services to the top 100 cities in the U.S. That means rolling out significant parts of the network in 2010. Also on Maloney’s check list: a low-cost design of the network. “It has to be Web 2.0-capable,” he adds, which means having lots of bandwidth to send data either to or from devices. “It’s got to have a lot of bandwidth, up and down, and packets have be able to get off quickly.
